SUPERMARKID

Childhood obesity has become a problem of epidemic proportions. Whole Foods Market has the chance to make a difference, by teaching kids the relationship between the food they eat and the calories they burn.

Winner: YoungGuns International Award Student Bronze (2016)

Challenge: One in three children in the United States is overweight or obese. However, the solution isn’t to teach kids to count calories, or put them on a diet.

Insight: Many children do not understand the relationship between calories consumed and calories burned through exercise. Yet the relationship isn't that complicated.

Solution: We give kids a real-life lesson on the relationship between food and exercise. Using an app connected to the pedometer on their phone, or a fitness tracking wearable, kids earn points by being active.

In a special kids only “Supermarkid” section of Whole Foods, kids can spend those points on healthy, or less healthy, snacks. Giving kids everywhere a reason to eat healthy and exercise, all while teaching about the importance of a balanced lifestyle. Thanks to one little corner of Whole Foods.
